I've been using Kitty's Crumble for about two or three months now and my original opinion has changed significantly since I've gotten used to it.
The main thing to remember is, this is not a clumping litter. So my strategy is now to use half a bag (my litter box is rather large with a dome), which results in about four inches of litter depth to it and just change it every Sunday. That's it. The box doesn't smell, my cat doesn't seem to mind, the litter barely tracks and every week I just dump everything out and start anew.
The only real downside I see to this is that I'm using half a bag a week, or 26 bags a year, so that adds up in terms of cost.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I normally use "World's Best Cat Litter," and love it (see my reviews for that if you wish), but after I got hit with a sawtoothed grain beetle infestation, I had to throw all the litter out and needed to switch to something new temporarily to make sure all the beetles were dead and gone forever. Therefore, since I wanted something natural, I decided on "Kitty's Crumble."
sawtoothed grain beetle note: they're perfectly safe around humans and pets, they're a nuisance pest that eats grain, such as corn, like in World's Best, and it was the first time in my four years of using that product that I had that problem.
My cat, Garfunkel, has been using Kitty's Crumble for about three days. When you pour it out of the bag, it looks like you're pouring out dirt from the forest. That's not a bad thing, it's actually kind of cool, and it comes in a plastic code 5 (PP) bag that you can recycle through things like the Preserve Gimme 5 program.
Basically, after three days, I think it's working, but honestly, I'm not sure. Garfunkel has to have urinated it in multiple times by now, but I can't tell because it just doesn't clump. There isn't really a color variation either, it goes from light brown to dark brown, but I think that's just related to the mix of ingredients and doesn't indicate that urine has been soaked up. According to the Kitty's Crumble website, the litter is made out of coconut husks called "coils" which act as sponges. It also says to change out all the litter every seven days.
My theory right now is that the litter never really clumps, all the "coil" sponges just absorb the urine and basically every week they become full and you have to ditch all the litter and start over. Right now, the box doesn't smell, so there seems to be good odor control, but I really find it weird that there aren't urine clumps in the box. I live in a studio apartment, so it's not like he's urinating elsewhere as I would definitely smell it.
Anyone else use this letter that can confirm the urine never really clumps?
