Cats wash themselves constantly and the probability that they will ingest particulates of dust, grit, clay or whatever else may trap itself on their fur, is very high. Over a long period of time, it's not unreasonable to assume that these particulates can have an adverse effect on the animal. The hunt for the perfect cat litter is time consuming, expensive and frustrating. I have come to the conclusion that there isn't really a perfect cat litter, you just have to go for that which meets as many of your criteria as possible - and when you've met that, hope the cat will use it.
This cat litter meets SOME of my criteria, and my cat will use it. However, any SCOOPABLE litter must have some clumping additive to make it 'clump'. The exceptions to that are the naturally 'starch based' litters such as wheat or corn. The downside of wheat or corn has been some reviews of 'bug eggs' hatching and creating a big problem, (though how frequent this is, I don't know).
I liked the small granular composition of this product. I liked the clumping ability of it. I liked the odor control. I liked the low dust aspect. I liked that my cat would use it. The downside. The clumping additive.
Sometimes I noticed there was quite a substantial amount of loose powder sitting in the bottom of the litter-box and although all the granules of paper are coated with it to some extent, this powder does get on the fur. I realise that this is unavoidable, however, I had noticed my cat constantly licking herself in a manner that wasn't just merely washing in the normal way, but stopping dead in her tracks, washing her legs and looking agitated very often after using her box. When I washed the litter-box out, a very slimy, gel-like substance was highly noticeable from the water contacting the fine dust particles that would cling to the inside of the litter-box. It took some washing with detergent to remove.
I decided to switch to the Papurr non-clumping variety and this behavior has ceased. I had to get used to using this litter in an entirely different manner. Because it doesn't clump, you can't lift out the urine soaked particles easily, however, I found that if she had urinated heavily, I could remove a significant amount, and those that are left, I just stir back into the litter in the box and it's good to go. (Of course, stir after removing any fecal matter!) The odor control is good.
I can't blame the company for the additive in the clumping variety, because they just provide what the consumer wants - ease of removal of waste products and I think the additive is probably what all clumping litters use, whatever brand. However, my cat's health is more important, and whilst I am not saying this additive is causing a problem for my cat per se, I want to err on the side of caution. The non-clumping variety is a good product, it just requires different handling. I also like that it is enviromentally more 'clean' and bio-friendly to dispose of.
I have read some people say that the odor control isn't as good. I clean my cat's box out twice a day, morning and evening. I figure that as people, 'our litter-boxes' (toilets) would stink after only ONE use if we didn't flush every time! I think we cause companies to produce more chemicals to add to things like cat litter, simply because we don't want to be 'inconvenienced' with 'cleaning duties' too often. Quite frankly, I'd sooner make a little more effort, (and respectfully, it is only a little effort), to clean the box twice a day - your animal certainly prefers it - than to have strong chemicals added to the litter. In the long run, it helps the animals I love, me and the planet.
Apologies for a long review.
