(More customer reviews)Petmate makes a great, affordable, kitty litter box with a cover for kitties who like a bit more privacy when they use their litter box. Many cats don't like to be seen using their uncovered litter boxes--mine got scared or perhaps intimidated one day when I accidentally walked into the restroom while he was using his uncovered litter box. After that I switched to this model and I haven't had any regrets. It works very well; and my kitty seems quite satisfied.
The top can be attached to the bottom for carrying purposes; but I find it easier to just leave the top on the litter box unhooked so that I can easily clean it out at the end of the day. (My cat always looks at the box as I empty it out; he must wonder what on Earth I'm doing.)
Another obvious advantage to this type of litter box is that when kitty wants to kick around the litter after doing his business, the litter will be contained inside the covered litter box. That's really a great help as nobody likes the floors in their home to be covered with litter residue and granules. Great!
The entire litter box, both top and bottom, can easily be cleaned. I clean mine thoroughly once or sometimes even twice a week. In addition, because this model has no "steps" for kitty to climb up into and out of the covered littler box, there is no chance of kitty doing his business on the front steps! If your kitty scatters a bit of litter around the outside of the front entrance, I would suggest what another reviewer cleverly did--lay down some fake grass at the front entrance as a type of "welcome mat" so that any scattered litter right in front of the covered box will stay almost completely on the "welcome mat."
There is one drawback that leaves some cat owners a bit disappointed. Be prepared for that initial moment when you remove the top of the litter box. I would breathe through my mouth for a minute or two; there will be "fumes" or a smell that may not be so pleasant.
Overall, however, I would recommend this covered litter box. It's affordable; and I think the type of plastic is definitely sturdy enough for this type of use. The tope comes off easily for cleaning and you won't get litter scattered about all over your floor.
